How to Check and Replace Your Windscreen Wiper Blades

How to Check and Replace Your Windscreen Wiper Blades
Clear visibility is essential for safe driving, yet many drivers overlook the condition of their windscreen wipers. If your blades are streaking, squeaking, or skipping, it’s time for a check — and possibly a replacement.
Here’s how to inspect and change your wiper blades on your car, van, or campervan.
Why wiper maintenance matters
Windscreen wipers are your first line of defence in rain, snow, or muddy road conditions. Worn blades reduce visibility and can even scratch your glass if left too long. Keeping your blades in top shape is a quick job that improves safety and prevents damage.
How to check your wiper blades
Lift each wiper arm gently off the windscreen. Inspect the rubber edge for cracks, fraying, or stiffness. Run your finger along the edge (carefully) to feel for any roughness or splitting. If the rubber is dry, damaged, or no longer flexible, the blades won’t perform well.
Also check for how well they’ve been working. If you’ve noticed streaks, smears, squeaks, or skipping — even during light rain — those are signs the blades need replacing.
When to replace them
Most wiper blades should be replaced every 6 to 12 months, depending on use and exposure to weather. If your vehicle sits outside in the sun or experiences heavy rain often, more frequent replacements may be needed.
How to replace your wiper blades
Replacement is easier than you think. First, check your owner’s manual or current blades for the correct size and type. Wipers typically clip or slide off with a small locking tab. Carefully lift the arm away from the glass, press the release tab, and slide off the old blade.
Slide the new blade into place until it clicks securely. Gently lower the arm back onto the windscreen. Repeat for the other side. If your campervan has a rear wiper, don’t forget to check and replace that one too.
Extra tip: Keep them clean
Wipe down your blades every couple of weeks with a damp cloth to remove dirt and road grime. This extends their life and improves performance.
Keep your vision clear
Regularly checking and changing your wiper blades is a small maintenance task with a big impact on your safety — especially during long journeys or bad weather. Add this to your seasonal checks or your pre-trip campervan prep.
