Turning a VW Caddy Into a Micro Camper: A Colebrook Transporters Story

A VW Caddy micro camper conversion is one of the most rewarding small-van projects you can create. When Tom arrived at the Colebrook Transporters workshop in Plympton with his VW Caddy, he wanted something compact, comfortable, and practical. His goal was simple. He wanted a van that looked normal during the week but could transform into a micro camper at a moment’s notice.

“I want a Caddy that still works as my daily van,” he said, “but I also want a place to escape for a night whenever I feel like it.”

This became the starting point for a conversion designed around flexibility and smart use of space.

Planning the VW Caddy Micro Camper Conversion

The VW Caddy is ideal for a micro camper build because it balances size, drivability, and space. Tom’s Caddy needed to stay useful for work, so the interior had to be modular and easy to remove. During the planning session, we focused on four goals: comfort, practicality, storage, and stealth.

To achieve this, we designed a conversion that could fold away quickly, store essentials neatly, and offer enough space for sleeping, cooking, and relaxing. Every part of the design had a purpose.

Building the Micro Camper Bed Platform

The bed platform was the foundation of the conversion. We built a custom fold-out bed that extended to full length at night but folded flat during the day. When stored away, it kept the load space open so Tom could use the Caddy normally for work.

This simple system allowed the van to switch roles instantly. The design was lightweight, strong, and easy to operate. Most importantly, it created a comfortable sleeping area without permanent fixtures.

Creating Practical Storage Solutions

A successful VW Caddy micro camper conversion relies heavily on good storage. We added organised compartments beneath the bed platform to hold cooking equipment, bedding, chairs, tools, and water containers. Everything slotted into place, which meant nothing moved or rattled while driving.

This storage layout made packing and unpacking straightforward. It also ensured that Tom always knew where everything was during a trip, which is essential in a compact micro camper.

Installing the Slide-Out Kitchen Pod

At the rear of the van, we built a slide-out kitchen pod that could be accessed instantly from the tailgate. Although compact, it provided enough room for a stove, cooking gear, and a small prep surface. The unit included storage for pans and utensils, along with space for a cooler.

This tailgate kitchen gave the Caddy a functional outdoor cooking area while keeping the interior clean and uncluttered. It also allowed Tom to prepare meals quickly during weekend trips.

Adding Insulation, Carpeting and 12v Electrics

To complete the micro camper, we insulated and carpet-lined the interior. This made the van warmer, quieter, and far more comfortable. The soft-touch finish also created a homely feel, which is important for small-space camping.

We then installed a discreet 12v electrical setup. This included LED lighting and USB charging points, with the option to add a leisure battery. The switches were positioned neatly so the Caddy still looked like a standard van from the outside.

Tom’s First Micro Camper Adventure

A week after collecting his newly converted VW Caddy micro camper, Tom sent us a photo from the cliffs near Tintagel. The tailgate was open, the stove was boiling water for coffee, and the interior lighting glowed softly.

His message read: “First night was perfect. Warm, comfortable, and quiet. It feels like a proper camper but still drives like my van. Thank you.”

Feedback like this is exactly why people choose micro camper conversions. They offer freedom without complexity. With a small van like the Caddy, you can escape at short notice and explore new places with very little setup.

Why the VW Caddy Works So Well as a Micro Camper

There are many reasons people choose a VW Caddy micro camper conversion. It is easy to park, affordable to run, and surprisingly spacious. It also allows for stealthy overnight stays, which many travellers appreciate. Because of its size, the Caddy is ideal for solo adventurers or couples who want a compact, comfortable setup.

Caddy conversions are adaptable too. You can build a convertible bed system, a basic camping platform, or a full weekend micro camper with storage and electrics. The layout possibilities are almost endless.
